So what was the first job ever?
Well, history tells us that humans began as hunter/gathers several thousands of years ago in order to survive, and needs were simple. They are based on survival and include food, clothing, shelter, tools and weapons. They went about their work hunting and foraging to eke out an existence.
Today people go to work and get paid so they can buy these survival necessities that man either made themselves or hunted for all those years ago. Systems varied over the years from bartering for goods to buying and selling using some form of currency.
Of course, there were and still are other less ‘tiresome’ workers that used illegal means of procuring these goods! Jobs of today are many and varied from labouring in a field to highly specialised professions such as doctors and architects. Some of these jobs are easy enough to obtain with little qualifications required but others have intense training and can take many years to perfect.
What do the surnames ‘Archer’, ‘Cooper’, ‘Baker’, ‘Jagger’ and ‘Chamberlain’ have in common? They were names taken by people who did those jobs, namely ‘skilled with a bow’, ‘a maker of barrels’, ‘someone who made cakes and bread’, ‘a person in charge of trains in a coal mine’ and ‘someone in charge of a household!
